Na‘alehu Main Streets mission is to promote food security in the Ka’u community. By offering ongoing gardening training, encouragement, workshops on food preparation, preservation and sustainability, working toward the goal of building a more healthy, vibrant and thriving community. Working hand-in-hand with the community and our partner (Jana Bogs of Beyond Organic) to provide raised garden boxes, with high quality nutritious soil, to bring fresh, wholesome, organic food to the backyards of Ka‘u. Ka’u is designated as a food desert by the USDA.

We are also in the process of resorting Na‘ohulelua Historic Garden on Kamaoa Road in Waiohinu which was abandoned for six years. With the community support the garden will be restored beyond its former glory by planting, along with the original native plants, a food forest and edible gardens for future generations to enjoy. Once the garden has been refurbished, we intend to welcome the community to small private and community events, garden parties, picnics, workshops, classes and gatherings.
